How to choose a laptop: 5 top tips

With laptops outselling desktops for the last 4 years, it is becoming more and more likely that your next computer purchase will be a laptop. One of the biggest problems with this is the massive range of products available. It is often overwhelming how many choices there are. So here are a few tips to help you on your way to selecting a laptop.

1. Portability and Battery Life

One of the advantages of a laptop is that you can carry it around. Obviously, how powerful it is can affect how long you can carry it around for. More powerful components will also make a laptop heavier due to the need for extra cooling and higher voltages as well as a bigger battery. So when you buy your laptop, make sure you see whether it is light enough for your needs and look at the quoted battery life to see whether it fulfils your demands. Some laptops contain graphics switching to switch between a dedicated and integrated graphics card in order to provide a longer battery life when needed. This is another option however these laptops are often a bit more expensive than those without the feature. Netbooks also have a decent battery life and are highly portable but most people will find them horribly slow for everyday use

Sony’s Tokyo Event: New PSP, Playstation Suite for Android

Sony is currently holding an event in Tokyo which, if rumors hold true, could be the unveiling of the new PSP 2.

You can follow the event live here

Sony has announced Playstation Suite which allows you to play Playstation games through a PSP emulator and access Playstation content on Android devices. It is supposed to be available by the end of this year.

A new PSP repalcement has been announced with lots of social features. It has two analog sticks and a high resolution touch screen. (Photo from engadget)

The PSP features a 5 inch OLED screen with 960x544 resolution (About 4x the current PSP resolution). It has both 3G and WiFi and uses a new type of game media which looks kind of like a DS cartridge. (photo from engadget)

The device also features touchpads on both the front and the back and it still looks similar to the current PSP although maybe a bit bigger due to the larger screen. It also has social features to add more interaction to games. So far, game demos of Little Big Planet, Killzone!, Resistance and Uncharted have been shown and from the pictures, they look pretty amazing! That's probably thanks to the quad core processor. This PSP looks like it has a lot of awesome capabilities. Guess we are just going to have to wait until Sony releases it to see how it is.

Review: Playstation Network Movies

Introduction

Recently, Sony released a movies store on their Playstation 3 where you can buy or rent the latest and not so latest movies. I was able to test this service out just recently and here is my review of it.

Pros

  • Easy, inexpensive delivery service
  • Integrated into the PSN store without an additional download
  • Has both HD and SD movies for people with not enough download limit
  • Movie rental service is convenient
  • Decent video and sound quality

Cons

  • 5.1 channel surround sound is not activated by default
  • HD movies are not 1080p

Review

I rented three movies, Surrogates, Invictus and 2012. I found the delivery method was easy but on my 2Mbps connection, the movie took about 8 hours to download which is a bit of a pain. This means you have to plan ahead of time. Conveniently, Sony does give you an option to play the movie while it is downloading but the download is so slow that it will keep pausing the movie.

Sony to Launch Slimmer, Cheaper PS3

[ad#Adsense]

COLOGNE, Germany (Reuters) - Sony Corp will launch a slimmer, cheaper version of its PlayStation 3 game console next month, hoping to jumpstart sales and win back market share from rivals Microsoft and Nintendo.

Starting in September, the latest, less bulky version of the PS3 will be rolled out at $299 in the United States, 299 euros ($422.7) in Europe and 29,980 yen ($315.6) in Japan, the company said on Tuesday.

That represents a major price cut from the existing PS3 models, which runs between $399 to $499 and have proven less popular than Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii.

"The main thing is that there is a significant price cut," said Ed Barton, analyst at Screen Digest. "We have argued since the beginning that there must be a substantial cut and this is a positive development."

Sony's new PS3 comes with a 120 gigabyte hard disk, but consumes 34 percent less power than the original model and is 32 percent smaller, Sony Computer Entertainment Chief Executive Kazuo Hirai said at the Gamescom video game trade show in Cologne, Germany.

Sony unleashes new PSP!

The new, slimmer and lighter PSP

The new, slimmer and lighter PSP

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Sony Corp unveiled on Tuesday a smaller, lighter PlayStation handled game device called the PSP Go, in a race to catch rival Nintendo in an intensely competitive mobile games arena.

Hours before, Nintendo said it sold more than 15 million units of its blockbuster "Wii Fit" fitness game, and plans an update -- the Wii Fit Plus -- later this year.

Sales of the Wii have dwarfed those of more technically souped-up and pricier rival consoles from Microsoft Corp and Sony Corp, by broadening its audience beyond hard-core video gamers.

On the second day of E3, the largest U.S. video games conference, Sony and Nintendo vied for the spotlight, a day after rival console-maker Microsoft charmed audiences with its "Natal": groundbreaking technology utilizing full-body motion-capture for gamers.

It was the first full day of the show, which is expected to draw some 40,000 game enthusiasts.

Many cheered and whooped at the press event at mere glimpses of new versions of popular games like "God of War" and "Super Mario Bros.," or at the mention of secretive ones like "Agent," which is being developed for the PS3 by the creators of "Grand Theft Auto."

Sony's PSP Go goes on sale October 1 in North America and Europe for about $249, before hitting stores in Japan November 1. It will be half the size of Sony's current PSP 3000 and 40 percent lighter, executives said.
